Screen Recording (iOS only)

Record your iPad screen to help your students in Showbie

Written by Kenny Dickie

Screen Recording lets you record your iPad screen while explaining your work with your voice and an optional camera. Recordings can be uploaded to assignments, class discussions, or communities.

How to Start a Screen Recording

Go to the location where you'd like to upload and tap the plus icon (+).

This will open up the file menu. Choose Screen Recording. If you haven't already, you'll be prompted to allow permissions on your microphone and camera. You can also choose to record the screen only. Your selection here will be the default setting when you choose to record your screen again.

Choose a Recording Mode

You can choose to either record your screen with the Microphone and Camera, or screen only. Consult the table below to help decide which Mode to use!

Screen + Microphone + Camera

Choosing the Screen + Camera option will set a picture-in-picture setting as well as:

  • Resize the picture-in-picture video.

  • Switch between the front and rear cameras.

  • Drag the video window to a different corner.

  • Turn the camera or microphone on or off while recording.

Recording Screen Only

If you choose Screen Only, you won't be able to enable the camera or microphone during that recording. To record with audio or video, you'll need to start a new recording. If camera or microphone permissions have been disabled, you'll need to re-enable them in your iPad's Settings. See our article on managing permissions for instructions. To learn how to do this, check out this article.

Recording

Once you've decided on your mode, you're ready to record. To do so:

  1. Tap Record (red circle).

  2. Record your lesson or demonstration. (While recording, you'll see the length of the recording as you go along. You can pause the recording if you need to and then resume later.)

  3. Tap Pause if needed.

  4. Tap Save when finished.

  5. Review or trim your recording.

  6. Tap Done to upload.

After you've chosen your setting, the recording menu will be shown at the bottom of the screen.

✍️Things to know

Recording requirements

  • The app must be in full screen to record. You cannot start a recording while in split screen, and if you are recording and go into split screen, the recording will be paused.

  • Device rotation is not supported. If you rotate while recording, you will be notified that the original orientation must be used, and the recording will be paused.

  • Backgrounding the app is not supported. If you exit the background while recording, the recording will stop and finalize, and the video editor will be displayed with an alert saying the recording has been interrupted.

    Privacy

  • Your keyboard and notifications will not be recorded with the screen recorder. There is no need to turn off notifications before recording, as they won't show up in the video.
