Canvas is a flexible, creative workspace for live instruction and modelling in and out of class. With Canvas, teachers can easily create an interactive whiteboard by adding images, diagrams, text, and shapes to engage students in a concept, extending classroom instruction without jumping between tools. While you teach, your students can follow along with real-time updates and a range of digital annotation tools that bring teaching, student thinking and feedback together in one seamless workflow.

Below are commonly asked questions and answers to get you started using Canvas!

How to Enable Canvas On School Devices and Networks

🛜 Showbie's Canvas features rely on background services that must be allowed through your device and network's content filtering systems or firewall.

If your school has not used Canvas before, or if you are experiencing any issues with accessing Canvas features, please ensure your school's IT team has reviewed the following support articles depending on your data region in Showbie:

Please contact your account manager or our customer experience team if you're unsure of which data region is correct for your school.

Student and Teacher Activity on a Canvas

When a teacher creates a Canvas in the Materials tab of an Assignment, it will automatically populate into each student's private folder as well. Students can watch their teacher annotate Live on the Canvas, while maintaining their own editable layer to make notes and practice on.

Teachers can:

  • Access the student's Canvas' and make edits.

  • Teach interactively by writing on a shared Canvas that students see live.

  • Lock the Canvas resulting in the student's layers switching to read-only.

  • Have the main copy of the Canvas in their account.

Students can:

  • See the teacher's edits appear live as the lesson progresses.

  • Annotate, draw, or insert shapes on their own layer without affecting the teacher’s base content.

  • Keep their edits on the Canvas private unless the teacher chooses to review or merge them.

  • Keep their own edited copy in their account.
