Showbie offers structured, customizable grading options with flexible Grading Formats for each assignment. These allow for a quicker, more consistent grading experience while still supporting the various types of feedback that can be provided to students.

Choosing a Grading Format

When creating an assignment, select the Grading Format option in the New Assignment menu to view the list of grading formats that are available for use when entering grades on submitted student work.

The Grading Formats include:

  • Points: a numerical score with a preset maximum.

  • Custom Entry: any text or character, including letters, numbers and emojis.

  • Completion: a selection of either "complete" or "incomplete".

  • No Grade: indicates that this assignment is not being assessed with a grade.

When Points is selected as the Grading Format, a text field will appear where you can set the maximum number of points for the assignment.

✍️ Grading Formats can always be changed after an assignment has been created. If a grade has already been assigned, it will automatically switch to the new corresponding format.

Using Grading Formats in Assignments

Setting the grading format when creating an assignment will change how the grade is typed, entered, or selected for each student. The grading format will be the same for each student that submitted work in the assignment.

The assigned grade for a student will also be displayed next to the student's name in the assignment's student list.

  • Points will display as a number over the maximum number of points set for the assignment.

  • Custom Entry will display the letter, number, or emoji typed into the grade input field.

  • Completion will display a drop-down list of options including "complete" and "incomplete".

  • If No Grade is selected as the grading format for the assignment, the Grade input box will be replaced with a label of “No Grade”.
