Short answer questions can be manually graded, allowing teachers to mark a response as correct even when it doesn’t match one of the expected answers. This is helpful when giving credit to students who understand a concept but worded their response differently. It also allows partial marks to be given to responses that are partially correct.
✍️ Manual grading is only available for short answer questions. Any adjusted marks or changes in points will be shown in reports that are downloaded or distributed after those changes were made.
Manual Grading
The manual grading feature lets teachers adjust the scoring of short answer questions once the assessment is complete. To do this, simply click on a student's response in the live results table to review and update their marks.
In the grading menu that appears, you can mark the answer as:
Correct by selecting the checkmark icon.
Partial mark by selecting the / (slash) icon.
Incorrect by selecting the x icon.
In the grading menu, you can also:
Undo manual grading: click undo after changing the mark. Adjusted marks are remembered and can be undone later if needed.
Navigate between student responses: use the up and down arrows for faster grading. This will save the marking of the current response.
Return to the results list: click Done to save your changes and close this menu.
Assign partial marks: change the number of points received by this response.
Partial Marks
When manually grading a student’s response, you can also award partial credit (up to the maximum number of points assigned to that question). By default, each question is worth 1 point, so partial credit will typically default to 0.5 points.
Changing the number of points available for each question will require editing the questions in the assessment editor. The new point values will be displayed the next time the assessment is given.
🚨 Manual grading is only available for short answer questions. Other question types can either be awarded the full point value or no points.
Appearance in the Results Table
Manually graded responses are displayed in the results table with a folded top-right corner. If partial marks are given to a response, the corresponding cell in the results table will have a yellow background.
